Joseph Pennella

I was born in Morra De Sanctis, Providence of Avellino, Italy where I attended school and grew up. When I was only four years old, my father came to know the lord Jesus Christ. I was raised in a Christian home when my father became the assistant pastor in our city.

At the age of 12, I became the song leader at the church my father attended. I also accompanied my father in all the visitations to church members and friends. However, even with my Christian background and all my church activities, I had not had my own experience with Christ.

On December 22, 1962, at the age of 15, I received the Lord as my personal savior. What a change happened in my life! I decided to follow Christ and made my covenant with the lord to serve Him.

I was a member of the Chiesa Cristiana Evangelica di Lioni, Provicia di Avellino and became very involved in the activities of the Church under the leadership of my Pastor Rocco Ciotta. At the age of 16, in the month of August, God called me in the ministry. My call was confirmed with the Word of God, Romans 10:14-17. That very Thursday night, I prayed this prayer: "God, in whatever way I could be used, use me." And I still today have this thought in my mind. On Sunday of the same week, to my surprise, my pastor called me to preach my first sermon.

My first sermon was from the book of Isaiah 55: 7-13 and the Lord blessed us that morning. That same morning., my Pastor realized the call of God on my life and encouraged me to pursue the field of ministry. He advised me to take some Bible courses. I immediately began taking correspondence courses at Assemblee di Dio, Department of Education. Once I completed the courses, the school recommended that I continue my studies at Istitito Biblico Bereano. I attended and completed the curriculum of the institute.

In 1963, I immigrated to Switzerland, where I met pastor Staub in the city of Solocturn. he saw in my life the call of God and he elected me the Youth Leader in his church. The following year, I became the assistant pastor in his Church.

In 1968, I returned to Italy for a vacation. During that time, I visited a church in Torella Dei Lombardi. It was there that I met a young woman who would become my wife on July 27, 1969.

On November 22, 1969, my feet touched American soil for the first time. I became a member of the Full Gospel Assembly and very involved in church activities: a member of the board and a Sunday School Teacher. I preached in various times; and visited other churches. While visiting a church, I met Reverend Frank Fortunato and he introduced me to the CCNA family.

In 1971, God put in my heart to start a church in New Haven. I pioneered the Italian Christian Church and Pastored it for nine years. In the meantime, God opened to me the opportunity to evangelize. I started an Italian Radio Program "Messagio di Vita," ("Message of Life"). God opened up another opportunity in another radio station. I was blessed to be on the radio two times a week. During this time, God's blessing was always with us and He blessed us with four children, Sara, Jonathan, Jerry, and Melanie.

Once the New Haven church became strong enough, I resigned and pastored the Evangelical Christian Church in Waterbury, where today, I still pastor. God blessed us with membership growth and again He opened the door for us to evangelize. This time, it was through the television ministry.

During my time with the Waterbury Church, I was involved with the Billy Graham Crusade, the Full Gospel Business Men Fellowship and Gideons Fellowship. I was nominated for the American Christian Leadership Council "Who's Who in Christian Leadership" in 1989 and in 1992/93, I was awarded, Who's Who in Religion."

Recently, I have been successful in participating in another Bible Conference Course with Liberty Home Bible Institute. Currently, I continue to take courses.

God has blessed my life. Ever since I have dedicated my life to Him, He opens opportunities for me to serve Him. I always long to find ways to serve Him better as each day passes. (My prayer still remains "In whatever way I can be used, Lord use me.")
